Best Sunset Paddles in Florida: Check the Closing Time First

Sarasota County lists the park on Lido Key as open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a free non-motorized launch into Brushy Bayou and the South Lido mangrove tunnel network. Our Beginner rating applies to the protected bayou and tunnels. The Sarasota Bay extension is recorded separately, and unrated, because leaving the tunnels trades shelter for open-bay exposure.

PaddlePin’s take: the tunnels are the part to do first, while there is light to see the roots and the turns. Keep the sunset for the open bayou near the launch, not for the middle of the tunnel network.

Sarasota County lists Turtle Beach Park as open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The county’s paddling guide describes the Jim Neville Marine Preserve trail as a loop of about a mile that suits novice paddlers, which is exactly the size of paddle that fits around a sunset. The same guide tells paddlers to watch for motorboats when crossing the Intracoastal Waterway.

Two cautions from the record. That county guide was published in 2017, before Midnight Pass at the south end of the bay reopened to the Gulf in 2024, so treat any trip toward the pass as a different paddle. And parts of Little Sarasota Bay are slow-speed manatee refuge waters.

The Guana River Dam use area is recorded as open 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a $3 parking fee, a ramp on the tidal river side and one on the lake side. It is the only east-coast launch in this guide that stays open after sunset.

The tide matters more than the clock here. Our record says plainly: do not launch on the Guana River side without checking the tide, because at low tide the river can become unnavigable and mudflats can block the way back to the ramp. On the Atlantic coast the sun sets over the land, so expect evening light across the marsh rather than a sun dropping into the sea.

FWC’s Tampa Bay boating guide lists this City of Clearwater ramp as open 24 hours, with no launch fee. It is here because the access is real, not because it is a planned paddle: no official route, distance, difficulty or water conditions are published for it, and it is a shared ramp used by motorboats. If you use it for a sunset paddle, you are planning the route yourself.

The Main Lagoon mangrove estuary is a protected out-and-back of about 2.5 miles from the park’s accessible kayak launch. Estero Bay and the Gulf beyond are more open and exposed, and the record keeps them for calm days. Parking is limited during the boat-ramp improvements, so arriving late in the day is not guaranteed to work.

PaddlePin’s take: the whole 2.5 miles has to fit before sunset, so start early enough to paddle it without watching the clock.

Bahia Honda has two launches: an ocean-side beach carry-in and a Gulf-side boat ramp ($10 per boat plus park entry). Our record rates the Gulf side as the calmer of the two, with mild currents away from the Bahia Honda Channel, where the current is very swift. The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset.

We have been here: we field-checked the ocean side on the morning of 7 September 2026. We have not paddled it in the evening, and the calm water we found that morning was one morning, not a promise.

A calm-water shoreline paddle through shallow Big Lagoon and tidal marsh, rated Beginner for the lagoon shoreline. The park is on Central time and closes at sunset. The record is firm that the open-water coastal trail route beyond the lagoon is a different, higher-skill trip, and that you should stay out of the main Intracoastal traffic lane.

Florida State Parks recommends the calm northern shoreline of Grand Lagoon, and that is what our Beginner rating describes. The Shell Island crossing is recorded separately, unrated, because crossing the boat channel changes the risk entirely. The park closes at sundown.

Weedon Island is here as a warning as much as a pick. Pinellas County lists the preserve as open until about 15 minutes before sunset, so the evening light is an afternoon paddle with a firm finish. Trail closures change here too: use only the segments the county currently shows as open, and check the tide before launching.
